It’s one of those places
small town legend
locked off but
hikers look out for locals
4 wheel drives
keys passed on from generations
follow the river up
a mile or two etched into solid rock
dripping evergreens overhang
cliffs from which jumping children
and
parents holding their breath have
come for baptism in wildwaters
screaming
generations of laughter echoed
beyond air split apart by
daredevil bodies jumping into
shiver deep water
locals knowing
you only go in late summer
when water temperature
and skin are compatible enough
to molt into the wild raging
laughter.

Oak’s dapples sun’s rays
Red tailed Hawk
circles tilled clods
me too.

Ears strain at distant bird’s song
“Come share my oak”
Selfish need to feed my eyes
ears should be enough

Above the barn
Swallows swallow
flying insects
on the wing

Radio out of place
the green breezes carry
Downwind
Call to sod tilled
language overturned
beyond metal or rock and roll
Birds

“Knarled” I said
To Oak
“Small insignificant, still immature”
she replied
“You know little of acorns, squirrels
and standing still.”
She taunted and drove me away
looking back in a blink
Of Oak time.
LONGING TO GO
It was that spring renewal
Winter goin away
When the desire for leavin
Was leafin out
And the high desert
Callin coyote loud
From that place where the Ohhhs echoed
When last the sage grouse mated
At sunrise in the sagebrush
Boomin and dancing
Yellow brite flashin all around
Female’s attention risin with the sun.
This spectacle, the awe of it all.
Turkey vultures lookin down from
From an abandoned fire watch tower
Malheur, that place
That gets in your blood
Like the vampire’s bite
Like returnin to the womb
